Telegram bots for customer service: when they are worth it

A Telegram bot can be running in hours, with no business verification, no template approval and no per-message fee. That makes it far cheaper and faster than the WhatsApp Business API. The one condition, and it decides everything: your customers have to already be on Telegram — and that varies enormously between markets.

None. You can send what you like, which is more responsibility rather than less.

Reach

This is the catch: in Egypt Telegram is far less widespread than WhatsApp. In other markets the reverse is true.

When it is worth it

• Your customers are technical, or in a market where Telegram is common.
• You want to send large files or frequent updates with no per-message cost.
• You want to try an automation quickly before committing to WhatsApp.

When it is not

If your customers are not on it. A channel nobody uses is not a channel, it is another screen somebody has to open. If you are not sure, do not open it “to be present” — ask ten of your customers.
